The Badi community is one of Nepal’s most marginalized and historically oppressed groups. Originally known for their traditional roles as musicians and entertainers, they were gradually pushed to the margins of society due to social exclusion, economic hardships, and lack of opportunities. As a result, many Badi families, particularly women, were forced into exploitative work as a means of survival. This has led to generations trapped in a cycle of poverty, vulnerability, and discrimination.

Today, the Badi community primarily resides in the western and mid-western regions of Nepal, including districts such as Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Dang, Surkhet, and Salyan. They continue to face severe social stigma, lack of land ownership, limited access to education and healthcare, and extreme poverty. Their children, especially young girls, remain at high risk of early marriage and human trafficking, making it difficult to escape these challenges.

Recognizing the urgent need for education and protection, Badi Sarokar Manch, a local organization run by the Badi people themselves, has established a hostel in Surkhet that provides a safe and supportive environment for 110 Badi children. These children are enrolled in various boarding schools, where they receive formal education that equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to build independent futures. The hostel ensures their safety while also providing nutritious meals, emotional and social support, and a nurturing space where they can focus on learning and personal growth.

Despite the incredible work being done at the hostel, Badi Sarokar Manch faced challenges in securing enough food and educational materials to meet the needs of the children. In response, they reached out to Shenpen for support. Understanding the urgency of these needs, Shenpen extended its assistance by sponsoring nutritious meals and providing essential food supplies to sustain the children’s daily nutrition. Additionally, Shenpen donated learning materials to ensure they have the resources required for their education.

Through this support, Shenpen aims to uplift and empower the children of the Badi community, giving them the opportunity to pursue a future of dignity and self-sufficiency. We believe that every child deserves access to education, security, and the chance to dream beyond limitations.
